By installing FoxQuill you agree to this agreement. If you do not agree, do not install FoxQuill, and ask for a refund. The Terms of sale cover buying it.
The short version#
You may install FoxQuill on up to three computers and use it to write whatever you like. What you write is yours. Do not resell FoxQuill, share your key, or take the program apart.
What you get#
The Lifetime license gives you lifetime access to the major version of FoxQuill that was current when the license was bought, for example FoxQuill 1.x. Patch and minor updates within that major version are included. It does not give access to future major versions. Future major versions may need an upgrade purchase or the monthly plan.
FoxQuill runs offline. Once activated, lifetime access does not depend on any server staying online.
The monthly plan gives you every version of FoxQuill for as long as it runs.
This is a license to use FoxQuill. It is not a sale of the software itself. FoxQuill keeps ownership of FoxQuill.
What you may do#
- Install FoxQuill on up to three computers you use.
- Use it for anything, personal or commercial. What you write is yours.
- Publish, sell, and license what you write. FoxQuill claims no interest in any of it.
- Make as many copies of your own files as you like.
- Run your own copy of the sharing relay, using the deployment notes in the repository.
What you may not do#
- Resell, rent, sub-license, or give away FoxQuill itself.
- Share, publish, or sell your license key.
- Take the program apart, decompile it, or work backwards from it to make a competing product, except where your local law says you may despite this clause.
- Remove or hide the license checks.
- Use FoxQuill to break the law.
Your writing#
Your writing is yours. FoxQuill never sees it, never claims it, and has no right to it.
FoxQuill keeps your work in a folder on your computer in an ordinary SQLite file. Export is always available, in formats other programs read, so you can leave whenever you want and take everything with you.
What FoxQuill sends#
Nothing about you or your writing, unless you use a feature that needs the network:
- Activating a license sends your key, the app version, and the name of your computer, to Polar.
- Starting a trial sends a one-way hash of your machine to the trial service. It cannot be turned back into a name.
- Checking for updates asks a public page which version is newest. It sends nothing.
- Looking a word up sends that one word to Wiktionary or Datamuse.
- Sharing a link uploads the chapter or book you chose, encrypted, to the relay. The relay cannot read it.
- AI features, if you turn them on, send only the fields you marked “Send to AI”, and only to the server you configured.
There is no telemetry. See the Privacy notice.
Updates#
FoxQuill checks for an update every time it opens and installs updates your license covers. This keeps everyone on the same build.
FoxQuill may change what FoxQuill does between versions. Where a change would lose data, FoxQuill migrates it. Where a feature is removed, the release notes say so.
Devices and deactivation#
Three computers per key. Free a slot with Settings > License > Deactivate this computer, or through your Polar account.
Deactivating removes the license from that computer. It does not touch your writing.
Ending this license#
This license ends if you break it. If it ends, stop using FoxQuill and remove it. Your writing stays yours, and export still works, because the files are ordinary files on your own disk.
You can end it yourself at any time by uninstalling FoxQuill.
No warranty#
FoxQuill is provided as is, without warranty of any kind. FoxQuill does not promise FoxQuill is free of faults or fit for any particular purpose.
Keep backups. FoxQuill saves one every night and gives you a button for more, but they live on your computer.
Liability#
To the extent the law allows, FoxQuill is not liable for lost work, lost profit, or any indirect loss. Where liability cannot be excluded, it is limited to what you paid for FoxQuill.
Nothing here removes a right your local law gives you.
Other software in FoxQuill#
FoxQuill is built on open source software, including Electron, Node.js, Next.js, React, SQLite, and TipTap. Their licenses apply to their parts and are listed in the application under Help > About.
Governing law#
Singapore law, and the Singapore courts. If your local consumer law says otherwise, your local law applies.
