Release notes

FoxQuill checks for updates when it starts and asks before it installs one. How updates work.

The newest is FoxQuill 1.6.1, released October 21, 2026. Download it.

FoxQuill 1.6.0 October 21, 2026

Writing

  • The page steps back while you type: the bars and panels fade out and return when you move the mouse. A closed panel slides in from the window edge.
  • Enter on a second empty line starts a new scene, and Ctrl+Z joins it back. New chapter is one click, and chapters number themselves.
  • Indented paragraphs and a drop cap, as in a printed book, also in PDF and EPUB. New books start this way; your books keep their look.
  • Set aside cuts words but keeps them, ready to restore. Ctrl+Shift+X drops a flag with a note. Both live in the side panel’s Kept tab.
  • The bottom bar counts the words in the chapter or in the whole book. Click the count to turn it over, or point at it to see about how many pages that is.
  • The goal ring marks the moment you reach your goal.
  • View > Spelling (Ctrl+;) turns spell check on and off.
  • Find’s whole-book list keeps up as you replace and write.
  • Open a card from the side panel and every mention of it in the text lights up.
  • Plan’s outline and corkboard move scenes and chapters with the keyboard too.
  • Typing in a long chapter is quicker, and FoxQuill opens faster.
  • Many small fixes to spacing, alignment and long names on every screen.

Your books

  • Books without a cover get one drawn from their title. A New book tile ends the shelf, and the page greets you by name.
  • The book menu shows the book you are in as a small card with its cover, and lists your other books to switch to. Rename a book from the pencil there.
  • First run asks your name and how a page should look. New installs start simple; Settings > This app > Advanced features brings the rest.
  • Your theme follows you across all your books, and a new one spreads from where you click. A book can keep its own.
  • Plan opens on the corkboard. Statistics shows today and your goals first.
  • A book with many narrators keeps the corkboard’s point of view filter to one line: the busiest five show, and the rest are a search away.
  • Import a book from the book list by dropping a file on it. Markdown keeps its italics and bold.
  • Save a dated copy (PDF) with a fingerprint of the text on its title page.
  • Each field on a card has its own remove button, and a character arc comes off in one go. Anything you filled in stays.
  • Setting up AI is simpler: use a model on your computer, sign in with OpenRouter, paste a Claude or OpenAI key, or use any compatible server. AI stays off until you turn it on.
  • Long field names on a card wrap instead of trailing off. Drag the line between names and answers to give the names more room.
  • Long names and titles everywhere wrap or show in full when you point at them: threads, beats, notes, tags, link types, book details and more.
  • Settings is simpler: new books take their look from Writing with one button, and the dictionary sits beside spelling.
  • Quiet motion throughout: books turn on the shelf to show their pages, dialogs and menus settle into place, and pages fade in. Your system’s reduce motion setting turns it off.

Safety

  • Every night each book is also saved as a plain text file you can open anywhere.
  • FoxQuill saves a full copy of your books before an update changes them.
  • Typing right after New scene, /scene or a chapter title no longer loses words, and a name typed at the start of a paragraph stays in place.
  • Statistics counts the last words you typed, even when FoxQuill closes suddenly.
  • Dictated text, or text from a text expander, that ends in quotes, a dash or three dots is no longer cut short.

Writing

  • Spell check. Right-click a marked word for suggestions, Add to dictionary, or Look up. Turn it on and pick the language in Settings > Writing > Spelling.
  • Card names in your prose read as plain text. Point at one to see its card, and Ctrl+click (Cmd+click on a Mac) to open it.
  • A deleted scene or draft goes to the Archive with its notes and history, and Restore puts it back where it was.
  • A new book opens on Chapter One, ready to type in.
  • Scene history has readable dates, and you can read a version before you restore it.
  • A scene that could not save is no longer lost, and closing right after typing saves first.

Library, Plan and Statistics

  • The book list shows each book’s cover, word count, and when you last wrote in it.
  • The sample book is now the opening of Little Women.
  • New books start with four card categories (Character, Place, Thing, and Other). Each link reads as one line, such as “Marmee is the mother of Jo March.”
  • Card search also looks in a card’s text, tags, and fields, and names on the relationship map keep out of each other’s way.
  • Add a scene from the Outline or the Corkboard. The Threads board keeps thread names in view.
  • Statistics fit the page, and the year grid shows today.

Exports and sharing

  • Standard manuscript follows the usual submission format, with your name, contact details, and word count on page one.
  • Print PDFs have a title page and a copyright page, and hyphenate justified English text.
  • Exports leave out chapters you have not written yet and are named after your book.
  • A shared book shows your title and name at the top, and readers’ comments stay on the right paragraph.
  • Word and EPUB files made by FoxQuill import back with the same chapters and scenes.

Backups and the app

  • Restore a backup from Settings > Files > Backup. FoxQuill shows what is in it and saves a copy of your books first.
  • The window opens where you left it, and the menu adds Plan, Save, and Find.
  • Text, links, and fields are easier to read in every theme.
  • When a trial ends or a license lapses, your books open read only, so you can still read and export them.

Fixes

  • Words like “it’s” count as one word, and the first words of each day count toward your goal.
  • Imports no longer lose the first chapter, italics, a foreword, or text in tables.
  • Encrypt my data turns on, and a license server outage no longer says your key is invalid.
  • Other accounts on the same computer can no longer open your books through FoxQuill’s local address.

FoxQuill 1.4.15 October 5, 2026

Planning gets a little easier, and a change that cannot be saved now says so and puts things back.

  • You can add a chapter from the Plan tab, in any of its three views, and it shows up in Write as well.
  • If a change on the Threads board cannot be saved, the board goes back to what is saved. Deleting a picture works the same way.
  • In the Outline, dragging a chapter down no longer shows an error page, and a scene dropped back where it was stays put.
  • Replace all, Undo, and restoring an older version wait for the last save to finish, so they always work on your latest words.
  • Deleting a picture that another book also uses no longer breaks it in that book.
  • Cards, notes, and the Trash say so when a change does not go through.
  • Goals for all books leave out books in the Trash.
  • EPUB exports follow Include chapter titles.
  • Moving a book to another computer no longer fails when a picture has an unusual name.

Saving is steadier: your words always land in the order you typed them, and a change that fails says so.

  • A slow save can no longer bring back words you had already changed.
  • Splitting a scene with /scene can no longer lose the text after the cursor.
  • Changing one setting no longer undoes another you changed on the same visit.
  • A change that fails to save says so, and a delete that fails puts the item back.
  • A goal for all books counts the words in every book. Deleting a goal asks first.
  • Deactivating while offline no longer costs you one of your three computers.
  • Deleting a share link also deletes its comments and suggestions, and a new link keeps the book’s title private.
  • Export, Compile, and Backup open one save window, not two.
  • Brainstorm and Feedback no longer get stuck on Stop, and a problem with the AI setup is shown instead of an empty reply.
  • Menus and the relationship map work with the keyboard, and shortcut hints say Cmd on a Mac.
  • Smaller fixes: long book titles fit the top bar, Help fits a narrow window, Compile says why Export is grayed out, and an encryption change cut off by a power cut tells you where your backup is.

FoxQuill 1.4.13 September 22, 2026

FoxQuill comes to the Mac, a deleted book goes to the Trash, and a whole book can move to another computer.

  • Deleting a book puts it in the Trash for 30 days, with every chapter, card, note, and picture, and Restore brings it all back. Delete forever still asks first.
  • FoxQuill runs on the Mac, on Apple silicon and on Intel. It is not signed by Apple yet, so the first time you open it you allow it once in System Settings. On a Mac, updates download in your browser.
  • You can move a book to another computer. Settings saves the whole book as one file, history and pictures included, and you can protect the file with a password.
  • Scrivener imports keep italics, bold, and underline, and a project written on a Mac keeps its paragraphs.
  • Italics and bold in a Word file or an EPUB you import now arrive in the book.
  • Compile has presets: Standard manuscript, Modern submission, three paperback sizes, Large print, a Beta-reader copy, and Ebook. Save your own setup under a name and pick it again next time.
  • The paperback presets make a PDF ready for a print service such as Amazon KDP.
  • You can choose the page size, margins, type size, line spacing, and indent, export only the scenes told by one character, and put a watermark on a PDF you share.
  • Turning off chapter titles or the title page in Compile now works.
  • FoxQuill finds LM Studio or Ollama on your computer by itself, with one button to use it.
  • A book’s backup also keeps card fields and folders, the relationship map, note folders, the Plan board, your bookmark, chats, and archived chapters.
  • The free trial is now 14 days, up from 7. When it ends, your books still open to read and export, and nothing is deleted.
  • Next to Buy monthly, FoxQuill says that the plan renews every month until you cancel, and how to cancel.
  • The privacy notice covers the website too, and the terms say where to write if a share link copies someone’s work without permission.
  • The terms, the license agreement, and the privacy notice say that FoxQuill is based in Nebraska, in the United States.

Help now points to the new website, and the legal pages are final.

  • Help > FoxQuill on the web opens foxquill.studio.
  • The help page about updates no longer mentions a download for Debian. Linux uses the AppImage.
  • The terms, the license agreement, and the privacy notice are final, and each one gives the address to write to.

FoxQuill 1.4.11 September 15, 2026

A fix for Linux: a book with pictures opens again.

On Linux, FoxQuill closed as soon as it had to show a picture, so a book with a cover or background art could not be opened. Pictures work again, and the download is a little smaller.
