The short version#
Your writing stays on your computer. FoxQuill has no account, no cloud, and no telemetry. It never reports what you write, how long you write, or that you opened it.

What FoxQuill keeps, and where#
Everything FoxQuill knows is in one folder on your computer:

FoxQuill has no copy of it and no way to get one.
What ever leaves your computer#
Only these, and only when you use the matching feature.
Activating a license#
- Goes to: Polar Software Inc., the shop.
- Carries: your license key, the activation id, the app version, and the name of your computer, which is used as a label so you can tell your devices apart.
- Why: to check the key is valid and to count your three devices.
- Kept: by Polar, for as long as your license exists.
Starting a free trial#
- Goes to: the FoxQuill trial service, a small Cloudflare Worker.
- Carries: a one-way hash of your machine, which cannot be turned back into a name, plus the day the trial started and the day it ends.
- Why: so a reinstall does not hand out a second trial.
- Kept: until the trial has been over for a year.
Checking for updates#
- Goes to: GitHub.
- Carries: nothing about you. It asks a public page which version is newest. GitHub sees the request, as any web server sees any request.
Looking a word up#
- Goes to: Wiktionary, or Datamuse, or a provider you added yourself.
- Carries: the one word you looked up. Not the sentence, not the paragraph.
- Kept: by them, under their own policies. FoxQuill caches the answer on your computer for thirty days so the same word is not asked twice.
Sharing a link#
- Goes to: the FoxQuill share service, a small Cloudflare Worker.
- Carries: the chapter or book you chose, encrypted before it leaves
your computer. The service cannot read it. The key travels only inside the
link you send, in the part after the
#, which browsers never send to servers. Also carried: what the link allows, when it stops working, and a hash of the password if you set one. - Also kept: any comment or suggestion a reader leaves, also encrypted, and the display name they typed for themselves.
- Kept: until you revoke the link or it expires, and then deleted.
AI features#
Off by default. If you turn them on, FoxQuill sends only the fields you marked “Send to AI”, and only to the server address you configured yourself. That may be a program on your own machine, in which case nothing leaves it at all. FoxQuill runs no AI server and sees nothing.
What FoxQuill does not do#
- No telemetry. No usage statistics. No crash reports sent anywhere.
- No advertising and no advertising identifiers.
- No selling or sharing of anything, because there is nothing to sell.
- No account, so no email address unless you buy, and then Polar holds it, not FoxQuill.
Cookies#
FoxQuill is a desktop program and sets no cookies.
The share viewer page keeps one thing in the reader’s browser: the display name they typed, so they are not asked again. It is stored on their own machine and sent nowhere except with a comment they choose to leave.
Your rights#
You can ask what is held about you, ask for it to be corrected, and ask for it to be deleted.
In practice there is very little to ask about. FoxQuill holds no copy of your writing. Purchase records are held by Polar, whose own privacy policy applies. Trial records are a hash and two dates, and can be deleted on request. Share links you revoke yourself.

Children#
FoxQuill is not aimed at children and collects nothing from anyone knowingly.

If this notice changes, the new version is published with the release it applies to, and the date at the top changes.
