Installing on Windows

FoxQuill is a normal Windows program. The installer is a file named FoxQuill-Setup.exe.

The blue warning screen#

The first time you run the installer, Windows may show a blue box that says Windows protected your PC. This is SmartScreen. It appears because the installer is not signed with a paid certificate, not because anything is wrong with the file.

To continue:

1. Click More info.
2. Click Run anyway.
3. Follow the installer.

The warning stops appearing once enough people have installed the same file.

Why there is no certificate yet#

A code signing certificate costs a few hundred dollars a year. FoxQuill is made by one person. The money goes into the app first. A certificate will be added later, and the warning will go away for everyone.

If you would rather check the file yourself, every release on the releases page lists a SHA-256 checksum next to the installer.

Where FoxQuill installs#

By default FoxQuill installs for your account only, under %LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\FoxQuill. You can choose another folder during the install. Your writing is never kept there. It lives in %APPDATA%\Folio\data. See Backup and where your data lives.

Uninstalling#

Use Settings > Apps > Installed apps in Windows, find FoxQuill, and choose Uninstall. Your books stay in %APPDATA%\Folio\data. Delete that folder by hand if you want them gone.
