Installing on a Mac

FoxQuill runs on macOS 13 (Ventura) or newer. There are two downloads:

Your MacThe file
Apple silicon: M1, M2, M3, M4, and newerFoxQuill-Mac.dmg
IntelFoxQuill-Mac-Intel.dmg

Not sure which you have? Open the Apple menu, choose About This Mac, and look at the line that says Chip or Processor.

Installing#

  1. Open the .dmg file you downloaded.
  2. Drag FoxQuill onto the Applications folder in that window.
  3. Open FoxQuill from Applications.

The first time it opens#

FoxQuill is not signed by Apple yet, so the first time you open it the Mac stops it and says Apple could not check it. You only have to allow it once.

On macOS 15 (Sequoia) and newer:

  1. Click Done on the message.
  2. Open System Settings, then Privacy & Security.
  3. Scroll down to the line about FoxQuill and click Open Anyway.
  4. Type your Mac password, then click Open Anyway once more.

On macOS 13 and 14, hold Control, click FoxQuill in Applications, choose Open, and click Open again.

If the Mac says FoxQuill is damaged, it is the same check being stricter. Open Terminal from Applications > Utilities, paste this line, and press Return:

xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/FoxQuill.app

Then open FoxQuill as usual.

The keychain question#

After an update, the Mac may ask whether FoxQuill can use FoxQuill Safe Storage in your keychain. Click Always Allow. It asks again after each update until FoxQuill is signed by Apple.

Updates#

FoxQuill tells you when a new version is out, as it does everywhere else. On a Mac, Download opens the new .dmg in your browser. Close FoxQuill, open the download, and drag FoxQuill into Applications again. Choose Replace. Your books are not kept in the app, so replacing it cannot touch them.

Encrypt my data#

Not offered on a Mac yet. It keeps its key in the keychain, and until FoxQuill is signed the keychain asks again after every update. One wrong answer there could lock you out of your own books, so the setting waits for the signed version.

Where your books live#

~/Library/Application Support/FoxQuill/data. See Backup and where your data lives.

Uninstalling#

Drag FoxQuill from Applications to the Trash. Your books stay in the folder above. Delete that folder by hand if you want them gone.
