Installing on Linux

FoxQuill for Linux is one file, FoxQuill.AppImage. There is no installer. The file is the whole program.

Opening it#

  1. Put the file in a folder your account owns, such as ~/Applications.

  2. Make it executable. In a terminal, in that folder:

    chmod +x FoxQuill.AppImage

Or right-click the file, choose Properties, and check the box that lets it run as a program.

  3. Double-click the file, or run ./FoxQuill.AppImage.

Your app menu does not list FoxQuill by itself. Open it from the file, or add a menu entry with your desktop’s own tools.

If it does not open#

An AppImage needs FUSE 2, which some systems leave out. Install it once:

SystemCommand
Ubuntu 24.04 and newersudo apt install libfuse2t64
Ubuntu 22.04, Debiansudo apt install libfuse2
Fedorasudo dnf install fuse-libs
Archsudo pacman -S fuse2

Then open FoxQuill again. If it still does not open, run it from a terminal. The message it prints says what is missing.

Updates#

The AppImage updates itself. Before it replaces the file, it checks the download against the SHA-512 checksum published with the release, and refuses a file that does not match. It needs to be able to write to the folder the file is in, which is why that folder should be your own. See Updates.

Encrypt my data#

Encrypt my data keeps its key in your desktop’s keyring, such as GNOME Keyring or KWallet. On a system with no keyring the setting says so and stays off. See Security and privacy.

Where your books live#

~/.config/FoxQuill/data, or the folder an older copy made before the app was called FoxQuill. They are never kept in the AppImage. See Backup and where your data lives.

Uninstalling#

Delete FoxQuill.AppImage. Your books stay in ~/.config/FoxQuill/data. Delete that folder by hand if you want them gone.
