Updates

The desktop app checks GitHub Releases for a new version every time you open it, before anything else. There is no switch for this.

What you see#

When a new version is ready, FoxQuill says so, for example “FoxQuill 1.4.15 is available.” It shows the release notes, which list what changed in plain words, and two buttons.

Update now downloads it, installs it, and opens FoxQuill again. It takes about a minute. Your writing is not touched.

Later takes you straight into your book on the version you have. FoxQuill is an offline program, so an update is never a condition of writing. FoxQuill offers the same update the next time you open it.

With no connection, FoxQuill opens your book as usual and says nothing. It tries again the next time you open it.

If the download fails, FoxQuill offers Try again and Later. A network problem should never lock you out of your own book.

A new major version#

A lifetime license covers the major version you bought. Every FoxQuill 1.x release is included if you bought under FoxQuill 1. FoxQuill 2 is not.

When a new major version comes out, FoxQuill does not update you to it. It shows a card that names the new version, a button to buy the upgrade, and a Continue button. Nothing changes unless you choose it.

The monthly plan always gets the newest version.

Checking by hand#

Help > Check for updates runs the same check whenever you like. If you already have the newest version, it says FoxQuill is up to date, and Continue takes you back to the page you were on. If it cannot reach the update service, it says that instead, and Continue does the same.

On Windows and Linux, Help > About FoxQuill shows the version. On a Mac, the app menu has FoxQuill > About FoxQuill. Settings shows the version and whether a newer one is available under Settings > This app > Version and updates.

Linux#

The AppImage updates itself, like Windows. Keep it in a folder your account owns, so it can replace the file. See Installing on Linux.

Mac#

Until FoxQuill is signed by Apple, a Mac cannot replace FoxQuill by itself. The button says Download instead, and the new version downloads in your browser. Close FoxQuill, open the download, and drag FoxQuill into Applications. See Installing on a Mac.

What FoxQuill sends#

Nothing about you or your writing. It asks GitHub Releases which version is the newest, and the desktop app downloads a file if one is.
