Every setting

One entry for every setting, in the order the Settings page shows them, with what it does and what it starts as.

Book#

The book’s own details.

Title#

The name of the book. Shows in the top bar, in the book switcher, and on the title page of anything you export. Starts as “My Book”.

Subtitle#

A second line under the title. Used on the title page of an export. Empty by default.

Description#

What the book is about, in your own words. Empty by default.

Genre#

One word or two. FoxQuill asks for this once, the first time you open a new book. Empty by default.

Style guide#

Rules about how the book is written: tense, person, the voice you are after. Empty by default.

Theme#

Which of the four themes this book uses. Starts on Forest. See Themes.

Background art#

An image, blurred and darkened, behind every panel. Empty by default, which gives a soft gradient instead.

Focus mode and sprints#

Typewriter scrolling#

Keeps the line you are typing in the middle of the window. Off by default.

Sound when a sprint ends#

Plays a short tone when the sprint timer reaches zero. Off by default. The bar glows either way.

Dim every line but the one I am writing#

Fades the rest of the page so only the line under your cursor is bright. Off by default. It works in focus mode only.

AI#

Enable AI features#

The one switch. Off by default. With it off, FoxQuill has no AI features and no mention of one anywhere. Your settings are kept, so turning it back on restores them. A book that already had a server configured before this switch existed has it on.

The settings below only appear when the switch is on.

Base URL#

The address of an OpenAI-compatible server, such as http://localhost:11434/v1. Empty by default.

API key#

Sent as a bearer token. Local servers usually need nothing here. Empty by default.

Model#

Which model to ask for. Fetch models lists what the server offers. Empty by default.

Context window#

How many tokens the server can hold at once. FoxQuill fits its context inside this with a margin. 32768 by default.

Maximum output#

The longest reply FoxQuill will ask for, in tokens. 700 by default.

Temperature#

How loose the writing is. Lower is steadier. 0.8 by default.

Card categories#

What kind of thing a Library card can be. A new book starts with eight: Character, Location, Creature, Lore, Item, Faction, Event, Other. Drag to reorder. A category that still holds cards cannot be deleted until you say where those cards go.

Note types#

What kind of thing a note can be. A new book starts with five: Note, Outline, Synopsis, Research, To-do. Drag to reorder. Built-in types can be renamed but not deleted. Deleting a type you made moves its notes to Note.

Dictionary#

Definitions from#

Which provider answers a definition. Wiktionary, built in, by default.

Synonyms from#

Which provider answers synonyms and antonyms. Datamuse, built in, by default.

Your own providers#

Add any other dictionary or thesaurus with a URL and a few paths. None by default. See Dictionary and thesaurus.

Export#

Buttons, not settings. Everything here is a file you open somewhere else. The full JSON copy of a book is not here any more; it is under Backup. See Import and export.

Import#

Chapter break#

A line to split chapters on instead of a heading. Empty by default, which means split on a level-one heading.

Backup#

Buttons, not settings. Two of them: the full zip of every book, and This book only, as one JSON file. See Backup and where your data lives.

Protect this backup with a password#

Off by default. When it is on, the backup file is encrypted with your password and saved as .folioenc instead of .zip. Import asks for the password. Lose the password and nobody can open the file, including you.

Sharing#

Every link you have handed out, with what each one allows and when it stops working. See Sharing.

Copy the link#

Puts the whole link on your clipboard, key and all.

Update the snapshot#

Replaces the stored copy with your text as it is now. The link stays the same.

Revoke#

Stops the link working and deletes the stored copy. This cannot be undone.

Security#

Desktop app only.

Encrypt my data#

Turns your database into an encrypted file. Off by default. The key is kept in your computer’s keychain, tied to your operating system account, so you never type a password.

FoxQuill copies the plain database first and leaves the copy beside it. Turning this on closes FoxQuill and opens it again.

A new computer, a reinstalled system, or a different user account cannot open an encrypted database. Only a backup can. Encryption is not a backup.

License#

Desktop app only. The server version has no license.

Activate#

Paste the key from your receipt and press Activate. A key works on three computers.

Deactivate this computer#

Frees the slot so the key can be used on another computer. Your books stay where they are.

About#

Check for updates#

Asks the public package registry, once a day, whether a newer build has been published. On by default. It sends nothing about you or your book. Turn it off and FoxQuill never reaches the network for this.
