License, trial, and terms
FoxQuill is a desktop app you buy once or rent by the month. It runs on your own computer. Your writing stays on it unless you share a link or turn on AI.
The trial#
The first time you open FoxQuill it offers a free 14-day trial. There is nothing to pay and nothing to enter. Press Start writing and write. A license key and the prices are one click away on the same screen, under I have a license key and Prices and plans.
The trial is tied to the computer. Uninstalling and installing again does not start a second one. The bottom bar shows how many days are left, in red, only for the last three. It never shows in focus mode. Settings > This app > License shows it the whole time.
When the trial ends, your books still open, but only to read, search, and export. Nothing is deleted, and you can write again the moment you activate.
The two plans#

Both plans allow three computers on one key.
Activating#
- Buy from Buy a lifetime license, US$59 or Buy a monthly plan, US$4.99 a month. On the activation screen they are under Prices and plans. They are also in Settings > This app > License.
- Polar, the shop, emails you a license key.
- Paste the key into the activation screen, under I have a license key, or into Settings > This app > License once FoxQuill is open, and press Activate.
FoxQuill remembers the activation on that computer. It does not need to be online again to let you write.
Moving to another computer#
A key allows three computers. To free one, open Settings > This app > License on the computer you are leaving and press Deactivate this computer. Then activate on the new one.
If you cannot reach the old computer, you can also manage activations from your Polar account. Settings > This app > License > Manage my account opens it.
Checking in#
- Lifetime: FoxQuill checks the key when you activate, and about once a month after that if you are online. Being offline never locks you out.
- Monthly: FoxQuill checks each time it starts. If it cannot reach the internet, it keeps working for fourteen more days and tells you how many are left. After that your books open to read and export until you connect once.
If the license server is down or busy, FoxQuill treats that like being offline. If a key stops being valid, or a lifetime key is for an older major version, your books still open to read, search, and export, and writing is off until you activate a key that covers this copy.
What FoxQuill sends#
Your license key, the activation id, the app version, and the name of your computer go to Polar. The trial sends a hash of your computer to FoxQuill’s trial service. It cannot be turned back into a name. Not one word of your writing is sent.
Refunds#
Refunds go through Polar. Write to them within 14 days of buying and they handle it.
