Notes and note types
A note is a piece of writing about the book rather than in it. Notes live at three levels: on the whole book, on a chapter, or on one scene.
Where to find them#
Open the rail on the right of the writing view and choose Notes. The two buttons at the top switch between this chapter’s notes and the book’s notes. A scene’s notes are on the scene itself, under Summary and notes.
Types#
Every note has a type. A new book starts with five.

Filter the list by type with the box at the top of the panel. Make a new note with the New note button, which asks which type you want.
Outline notes#
An Outline note is a bullet list that nests as deep as you like.
- Press Tab to move a line in.
- Press Shift+Tab to move it back out.
- Press Enter for the next line at the same level.
An Outline note opens in a compact reading view with a twisty on every line that has something under it. Click the pencil to edit it, and the list icon to read it again.
To-do notes#
A To-do note is a list of checkboxes. Click a box to check it. A checked line goes gray and gets a line through it.
Your own types#
Settings has a Note types section. Add, rename, reorder, and delete types there. A type you add uses the ordinary note editor; the nested list and the checkboxes belong to Outline and To-do.
The five built-in types can be renamed and reordered but not deleted. Deleting a type you made moves its notes to Note. No note is ever deleted by deleting a type.
